MidStateHoops.com Presents Matt Roth

Here's a guy that wants to play for Illinois. He seems to have a nice shot, so let's make him an offer and get the 2008 class started.

Shupert is not committed yet. Roth would like to come to U of I. Suggs looks like a good possibility.

Lil V (Jones) would probably come.

Not time to panic.

We would love to have Shumpert, but he seems to want to play ACC ball. Suggs is probably either Mizzou or Illini. I personally think Lil V would be great at Illinois as a hometown guy who could use Weber's system to make him ready for the NBA. I am trying not to panic, but it's tough right now.

A coach has to be able to recruit his kind of players not the ones other people think he should have. Should a CEO be stuck with advisers and officers he did not choose?

Let Weber get his own players for his system. If he does not win then panic. Bur right now, Holly cow, all he has done is win.

I understand that Weber should choose his own type of players, Scott. But keep in mind that Weber and his staff have made offers and spent lots of time recruiting the top ranked players in Illinois like Liggins, Humphrey and Dunigan. So it's not just a case of Weber not liking these guys for his system. When you are turned down, some call this a whiff, like in baseball.

It is and it isn't. If Weber does not not at least attempt to recruit the top players, fans like you will complain. The degree to which he recruited a given player is seldom known except to the player and the coach.

Humphrey was contacted early and often. But he was not offered until recently. The family said they were ticked off that they did not get an offer earlier.

I am not convinced Humphrey was ever a priority. (At one time he was ready to verbal.) Suggs is first priority. The second scolarship will likely be for Miller, or the kid out of New Albany, IN or for Matt Roth.
